01. IMAGE GALLERY. At http://www.go.com/Gallery?svx=webdir_toc you
can select from about 18 different categories and search from hundreds
of images, all nicely thumbnailed for your perusal.

02. KEEPING A CALENDAR. After opening your free account at
http://www.calendarserver.com, you can store your calendar on
CalendarServer's own site, update it, and even link to it from your Web
page if you wish. Sharing this way keeps everyone on the same, well,
calendar!

03. FREE ISP. Joe West has constructed an informative listing of free
Internet service providers, size of downloads, user comments, whether
banner-ad-supported, and so on. You'll find this material at
http://www.hereontheweb.com/freeinternet.htm . Keep in mind though,
"free" seldom is.

04. NATURE CALLS. Find birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and all
those creepy crawly things indigenous to your own backyard at
http://enature.com . The site, described as "bringing nature to life,"
provides comprehensive data from the National Audobon Society's field
guide series.

05. HOW FAST IS YOUR BANDWIDTH? Repeating a golden oldie, at
http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp you can
check the real speed of your Internet connection with the Bandwidth
Speed Test. No download is required.

06. AN ALTERNATIVE DEFRAG. A common complaint with the Win98 Defrag
is that it often stalls with virus scanners and screensavers active.
Not so reports E-Technik, with its freeware Power Defrag at
http://www.e-technik.com . This software reboots your system with its
own automation applet as a shell and, with maximized memory space and
optimal settings, E-Technik promises to outperform the traditional
defrag process.

07. BOOKMARKSYNC. After offering a way to transfer bookmarks between
computers, several readers suggested BookmarkSync. This free utility
allows real-time access of bookmarks, favorites and files from any
computer or browser. BookmarkSync works with Windows 95/98/NT/2K and
MacOS and does not require manual importing or exporting. It allows
import of AOL favorite places and Palm Pilot bookmarks and edit of
bookmarks on site. You'll find it at http://www.synchit.com/ .

08. PERSONAL NETCAST. David Lawrence has been in broadcasting for 28
years and it shows with the slick production he calls Online Today
Personal Netcast. You don't have to read this daily ezine: it's in
Real Audio. Give a listen and subscribe if you like it at
http://personalnetcast.com .

09. SPAM COMPLAINT FORWARDER. Register for this free service at
http://www.abuse.net . Then when you get that inevitable spam, you
forward it to the suspected domain of the spammer @abuse.net and the
Network Abuse Clearinghouse dips into its database of 12,000 domains to
hopefully get your complaint to the right person. You can research
this database on your own if you wish, and get some valuable information
as to how to read headers in your attempt to put spam where it belongs.

10. WEBSPLIT. This free program at http://www.websplit.com allows you
to view as many as nine Web pages at one time and chat with others
who are viewing the same pages. The Websplit icon resides on your
desktop and you can examine any of the multiple pages in more detail as
you wish.

11. DICTIONARY LOOKUP BUTTON. This one's slick! Follow the details
at http://www.m-w.com/promos/button/button.htm to place a dictionary
button on your Links toolbar, on Netscape Communicator or Microsoft
Internet Explorer. Then highlight any word you want to look up, click
the dictionary icon, and Merriam-Webster comes through again!

12. READERS WRITE. In response to an earlier item about the ability
of Netscape Communicator to provide a preferred search engine from any
of 9 offered, many readers leaped to the defense of Internet Explorer.
True, click the MSIE search icon and "customize" to call up a wizard to
design your searches the way you want them.

Another reader lamented on our Bulletin Board that she had all manner
of problems when she deleted AOL from her system. A response, albeit a
belated one, suggested the steps for "Getting AOL Out of Your System"
at http://dogwolf.seagull.net/cancel.html. An interesting report and,
by the way, if you aren't using the NNT Bulletin Board you really
should check it out, at http://www.escribe.com/bb/nettricks/ .

13. NEW ARCHIVE. By the time the next issue of NNT is distributed,
subscribers to the ArchivesExpress will have received their latest disk
containing about 900 of the best of this publication's 4+ years of
tips. A full year of updates is available for just $20 (slightly
higher outside the US.) Go here for details:
http://www.NeatNetTricks.com and click on the ArchivesExpress link.

14. THEY DON'T ALWAYS WORK. That's the best way to describe last
issue's featured WordWalla at http://www.everymail.com . It promised
to allow communications in 35 languages, but it doesn't seem to do much
of anything. I should have checked it closer, and I apologize for
wasting your time.
